How Genetic Blood Type Analysis Works
Your blood type is determined by genetic variants in the ABO gene. GeneType analyzes specific genetic markers (SNPs) in your 23andMe or AncestryDNA raw data to determine your ABO genotype and predict your blood type.
The ABO blood group system is controlled by the ABO gene located on chromosome 9. Different combinations of genetic variants determine whether you have Type A, Type B, Type AB, or Type O blood. Our genetic analysis examines key SNPs including rs8176719, rs8176746, and rs8176747 to provide accurate blood type predictions.
This genetic approach to blood type determination is particularly useful if you don't know your blood type but have genetic testing data from companies like 23andMe or AncestryDNA. However, since the Rhesus factor is also medically important for blood compatibility and transfusions, this genetic method only determines ABO blood group assignment. For complete medical purposes, you should still get an explicit blood test that includes both ABO typing and Rh factor testing.
